Terms vary by time and place. This list is a quick reference to help interpret historical wording.

ApoplexyParalysis due to stroke.
Brain FeverMeningitis.
Bright's DiseaseChronic inflammatory disease of the kidneys.
Child bed feverInfection following childbirth.
CholeraAcute severe contagious diarrhea with intestinal lining sloughing.
Cholera morbusNausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, elevated temperature, etc. (Sometimes used broadly; could indicate severe GI illness.)
Congestive chills/feverMalaria.
ConsumptionTuberculosis.
DecrepitudeFeebleness due to old age.
DropsyEdema (swelling), often linked to kidney or heart disease.
Dropsy of the BrainEncephalitis.
DysenteryInflammation of colon with frequent passage of mucus and blood.
EncephalitisSwelling of brain; sometimes described as sleeping sickness.
Falling sicknessEpilepsy.
