There are a total of 14 inscribed stones dating from 1863 to 1919. On a recent visit to Oldham County, we were able to locate this family graveyard. A picture of her gravestone is on file. Also in the same graveyard were F.L. Wheeler and his wife Martha R. along with daughters Hettie, Mettie and Amanda. At this time it is unknown if this was Purcella's family. Precilla's parents were listed as unknown in the marriage records. W.F. Wheeler signed off as her guardian. The actual spelling of her name is unknown at this time. On her marriage license it is spelled Precilla but on her gravestone, the spelling is Purcella. Her guardian was listed as W.F. Wheeler on another document. That document was certified by Martin DeMoss, County Judge, Oldham County, for final settlement between W.F. Wheeler and his ward, Priscilla Wheeler, the balance due from the estate of F.L. Wheeler (document on file) $123.68 dated March 10, 1885. Precilla (or Purcella, Priscilla) W. WHEELER was married to Verni E. VARBLE on 6 Jun 1881 in Mt. Hebron M.E. Church, Oldham Co., Kentucky. Frances Wheeler signed as surety for the marriage bond. This may have been Precilla's father but is unknown at this time. W.F. Wheeler also signed the bond. This may have been her brother, William Francis. Verni E. VARBLE20 was born on 24 Jun 1858 in Louisville, Jefferson Co., Kentucky. He was a Clerk in 1881 in Oldham Co., Kentucky. He died on 18 Aug 1899 in Oldham Co., Kentucky. Mary Alice Snyder passed along this story of how Verni died. After Edgar and Lillian's wedding, he went out on the second floor balcony of his home to wave good bye. The balcony collapsed causing Verni to fall to the ground. He died two days later. He was buried in West of Covington Church, Oldham County, Kentucky.16,17 On a recent trip, we were not able to locate this family plot but were told by some neighbors that the land had belonged to the Varble family. Verni's parents, Richard and Martha, as well as his brother Richard (Dickie) are also buried there. According to the book, Westport Kentucky, Vernie has two tombstones in this cemetery. 1879, Mar. The towboat Jim Hobson leaves for the Tennessee River under Dick Varble. It is chartered for 8 months to tow for the U. S. Captain Dick and his son Vern will go along to pilot the boat. [CJ, 18 Mar. 1879] U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was building Muscle Shoals Canal on Tenn. River, and the officer in charge contracted with Dick to work with his towboat at the canal construction project. The canal was completed in 1890 by Capt. George W. Goethals, who later build Panama Canal. 1879, July. Capt. Dick Varble and his son Bernie are home on furlough from Muscle Shoals where they have been using their towboat Jim Hobson towing for the U. S. They will return when the Tennessee River rises again to work there. [CJ, 22 July 1879] 1880, May. Bernie Varble of the James Hobson is having a furlough. [CJ, 7 May 1880] Verni managed the Louisville Boat Club for many years in the late 19th century. At that time, the club was aboard a large boat with boat repair facilities, bar and lounge and was anchoredon Louisville waterfront next to the USCG Life Saving Station during the summers and moved up to Towhead Island for shelter from ice during the winter. Precilla (or Purcella, Priscilla) W. WHEELER and Verni E. VARBLE had the following children: SSN=406-72-1378 Lillian Orlena VARBLE was married to Lieutenant Edgar Wallace WRIGHT on 16 Aug 1899 in Wesley or Union Chapel, Trimble Co., Kentucky.23,24 A W.A. Wright stated he was the guardian of Edgar in a handwritten note to the court clerk of Oldham County giving his permission for marriage. It is believed that this person may have been William Alexander Wright, his uncle. A R.M. Priest (believed to be Hannah's Uncle Richard) signed the marriage certificate for the church. Witnesses were listed as John Wheeler, Morris Kelly and Clarence Fisher. He had listed his occupation as farmer. In the 1900 Trimble County Census, he was listed as head of household, age 21. His occupation was as a farmer. Lillian was listed as age 18. They had no children at the time. Also living in the home were Hannah, Edgar's mother, a widow, age 45; Lydia Priest, Edgar's great-grandmother, age 70 whose parents were listed as coming from England; Julian A. Jenkins, a cousin age 6; and Clara Jenkins, a cousin age 4. Jenkins was the name of Lucy Clark Gwathmey Priest's first husband. She was divorced from Lieutenant Edgar Wallace WRIGHT before 15 Jul 1918. Lieutenant Edgar Wallace WRIGHT21,25 was born on 22 Dec 1878 in Trimble Co., Kentucky.26 He was a Louisville Police Department between Oct 1913 and 9 Dec 1937 in Louisville, Jefferson Co., Kentucky.25,27,28,29 On October 24, 1913, Edgar received a letter from the Board of Public Safety requesting that he report to the office on October 27th for "inspection and examination relative to becoming a member of the Police Department." On that day he was appointed a member of the department and "instructed to report to the Chief of Police for duty." A certificate signed by "three citizens of good character, and residents of the ward in which the applicant resides" was filed. In part, this certificate states that each of the signees "has known the said Edgar W. Wright intimately and well for the past three years, and is qualified to speak intelligently in relation to his character and habits, and states and represents that the said Edgar W. Wright is a man of good moral character, correct and orderly in his deportment, and not in any respect a violator of law or good order; that he is a man of sober, temperate, and industrious habits; that he is not addicted to the habitual use of intoxicating liqours, or other hurtful excesses." This certificate was signed by John Gruber, Ben. J. Sand, and William E. Holley. All were residents of the 12 Ward. Edgar lived at 2711 Cedar Street at this time. His previous occupation had been listed as laborer at a public warehouse for two years. At the time he reported having a wife and three children, no prior military service, and never being treated by a physician. He weighed 148 lbs and height was 5 ft 9 inches. On his annual Policeman's Bond for 1914, Edgar reported his address to be 2335 W. Chestnut St. In 1918, the Chief of Police sent a note to the Board of Safety, informing them "to the debts contracted by Patrolman E.W. Wright." An inventory was found, written on a brown paper bag, listing the following: Pay Meat Licence $25.00; Get milk licence; Edd. Wright Patrolman owes $66.78 to W.H. Brightman, 2400 Cedar, Grocer. He was appointed Sergeant on 30 Jun 1923 and Lieutenant on 4 Aug 1928. On February 6, 1926, Edgar filed an accident report with the Ashland Substation stated that "Horse fell with me in front of the above place, dislocated my left shoulder, was taken to City Hospital." His horses were named "Billie" and "Kelly". Info as I received it was that Aunt Billie got her nickname from her Dad who called her Billie after one of his horses. In the Louisville City Directory, Edgar was listed as a Sergeant 1925 and in 1930 he was listed as a Lieutenant. A letter in the file dated August 18, 1927 indicated that "the Board unanimously made the following demotions in the Police Department" in which Edgar was listed among the names of 10 Sergeants who had all been demoted to patrolman. It is unknown at this time by the researcher what incident occurred to warrant such action. This was followed on August 20th by a hand-written note by Edgar stating "I here by tender you my resignation to take effect at the expiration of my vacation August 30th, 1927." On November 22nd, 1927, a letter was submitted which recommended reinstating all but four of the original 10 to the rank of Acting Sergeant. Four days later, these same men were recommended to be promoted to the grade of Sergeant. In 1931, Edgar moved from 981 So. Preston to 823 So. Western Parkway. In January of 1934, Edgar was transferred from the Traffic Division to the First Police District. In a letter dated December 10, 1937, John M. Malley writes to the Director of Safety "I am writing you relative to the death of Lieutenant Edgar Wright, Fourth Police District. Lieutenant Wright died 12-9-37 at 3:28 p.m. while on duty at the Fourth Police District from a heart attack. He had been in the service of the Louisville Division of Police for 24 years, having been appointed October 27th, 1913. Lieutanent Wright served about three years of his time in the Traffic Bureau, working under the late Captain John M. Loran, and the rest of the time was spent in the various districts. He had a good record and during his period of time in the department lost but few days account of illness. Funeral services will be held from the Schoppenhorst Funeral Home, 19th and Market, Sunday, December 12th at 2 p.m., with interment in Evergreen Cemetery." Additional information about his service in the department was found in a newspaper article that was printed after his death: "Lieutenant Wright joined the force in October of 1913 as a patrolman. He later became a sergeant, was once demoted, resigned and was re appointed a sergeant again. In 1928 he was elevated to the rank of lieutenant. For a number of years he was associated with the late Capt. John Loran in the Traffic Bureau." In total, Edgar had over 24 years of service with the department. In a newspaper article supplied by Mary Alice Snyder there was a story regarding a Charity Horse Show: "Sergt. E.W. Wright of the Mounted Squad of the Louisville Police Department and Capt. James J. Carroll supervised the training period. Sergeant Wright will ride his mount, Kelly in the ring for the policemen". He died on 9 Dec 1937 in Louisville, Jefferson Co., Kentucky.30,28 Edgar's picture appeared in the newspaper when he died. The article reads as follows: "Police Officer Dies - A member of the police force since 1913, Lieut. Edgar Wright, 58, of 623 S. Western Pkwy., died of a heart attack shortly after reporting for duty Thursday afternoon at Fourth District headquarters, 28th and Main. Dr. John W. Kremer pronounced him dead at 3:30 p.m. As he walked into the station, he remarked to Lieut. Edward Metcalf, "I'm a sick man." He was persuaded to lie down, and lapsed into unconsciousness. The police emergency squad worked vainly over him for twenty-five minutes. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lillian Wright; a son, Leo Wright; a daughter, Miss Emerald Wright; and nine grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the residence." Cause of death, coronary occlusion. He was buried on 12 Dec 1937 in Evergreen Cemetery, Louisville, Jefferson Co., Kentucky. He was laid out in Schoppenhorst Brothers Funeral Home, Louisville, Jefferson Co., Kentucky. He is buried in the gravesite of Section 12, Range 5, Grave 39 (no marker). In 1889, at the age of eleven, William A. Wright, Edgar's uncle, became his legal guardian. On 23 February 1900, Edgar was appointed legal guardian of Lillian, his wife, a minor. Lillian Orlena VARBLE and Lieutenant Edgar Wallace WRIGHT had the following children: Edna Wallace WRIGHT was married to Ernest Paul SNYDER on 18 Dec 1917 in Clark County, Indiana. Ernest Paul SNYDER was born on 8 May 1896 in Illinois. He died on 12 Dec 1968 in Veterans Administration Hospital, Lexington, Fayette Co., Kentucky.32 Cause of death was listed as hepatic coma due to cirrhosis of liver with jaundice. Copy of certificate is on file. Paul had spent nearly 29 years of his life in the VA Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky. Edna Wallace WRIGHT and Ernest Paul SNYDER had the following children: ii. Jenette Marie SNYDER. Jenette Marie SNYDER was married to Gilbert ROEDERER on 1 Dec 1941 in Flora Heights Christian Church, Louisville, Jefferson Co., Kentucky. Henry Paul SNYDER was born on 11 Aug 1919 in Louisville, Jefferson Co., Kentucky. He died on 29 Jul 1966 in Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio. Cause of death was listed as arteriosclerotic heart disease. Copy of certificate on file. He served in the military in WWII. He was laid out in W.G. Hardy Funeral Home, Louisville, Jefferson Co., Kentucky. 4101 Dixie Highway. b. Richard WRIGHT was born on 16 Sep 1902 in Trimble Co., Kentucky. He died on 19 Sep 1902 in Trimble Co., Kentucky.33 This is an educated guess on my part. In the Trimble Co., Cemetery Book there was a child listed as being the son of E.W. and L.O. buried in the Hoskins Cliff Cemetery. The assumption was made that this was the child of Edgar Wright and Lillian Orlena Wright based on the age of the child in comparison to the other children they had. He was buried in Hoskins Cliff Cemetery, Trimble Co., Kentucky. c. Emerald (Billie) Melton WRIGHT27 was born on 26 May 1904 in Kentucky. She died on 6 Jul 1986 in Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio. She was buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Louisville, Jefferson Co., Kentucky. Billie & Gerald met at the Ft Knox, Kentucky PX and later married. While at Ft Knox, Gerald was the chief cook and Billie was branch manager of the PX. Billie retired from there. In about 1975, Bob and Barb Blumenbergs (Bob was Gerald's nephew) visited them in Louisville where they both lived. One of the stories that they related was about a large old bureau that they had in one of the many rooms of their apartment (lived on the entire top floor of an apartment building at 411 Chestnut Street). In the bottom drawer of the bureau were a huge amount of photos that they had amassed over the years of relatives, etc. (Must have been about 100 of them). The Blumenbergs were not really doing any genealogy at the time and didn't think much about them. In 1977 when Gerald died and the Blumenbergs flew down to Louisville for the funeral. One of Billie's relatives from Cincinnati had come down to take care of Billie and they never got to go through any of the pictures. Once things were settled and she had moved to the relatives in Cincinnati, they wrote to the Aunt or whoever she was staying with and were told that all the pictures had been thrown out......what a loss. The two of them had visited the Blumenbergs in the early 1970's staying at their home. Gerald refused to let Mrs. Blumenberg cook the whole week they were there. He would get up early and make the biggest breakfasts you ever saw. Billie would help him get it all ready then call them to breakfast. They had a great week and regret not tape recording some of their stories while they sat around the bar in the rec room! Aunt Billie's last known address was 4226 Mad Anthony Dr., Cincinnati, Ohio. Emerald (Billie) Melton WRIGHT was married to Gerald Joseph GRUBER. Gerald Joseph GRUBER34 was born on 2 Oct 1896 in Milwakee, Wisconsin. He died on 20 Jan 1977.35 He was buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Louisville, Jefferson Co., Kentucky. Gerald was cremated. SSN#: 514-09-3723 BIRTH: in file (Milwaukee County #231) DEATH: in file (Jefferson County, KY #12489) BURIAL: Cremated Photo in file Gerald was the head cook at Fort Knox, Kentucky until his retirement. Last known address prior to his death: 411 Chestnut Street, Louisville, KY. d. Leo Herman WRIGHT was born on 12 Aug 1906 in Louisville, Jefferson Co., Kentucky.36,37 Flora always said that Leo had lied about his age so that he could start working for Pullman when he was under age. The "delayed" record of birth that we have was issued on October 17, 1955 and lists his year of birth as 8/5/1905 (on file). According to the Birth Card Index located in the KY History Center Leo's birthdate was 8/12/1906 and he was born in Louisville, KY. Since this info was taken directly from actual county records of birth, this date is assumed to be the correct one. He died on 18 Jan 1956 in Waverly Hills Hospital, Louisville, Jefferson Co., Kentucky.38 Leo entered Waverly Sanitorium around 1953. His son Bill had come home from work to find him laying on the bed, not looking too good. Flora asked him to take his father to the hospital. Soon after, his was transferred to Waverly after being diagnosed with Tuberculosis. His health was improving and he was allowed to come home for a visit the Christmas of 1955. The family began making plans for his permanent return. Before his official release, he passed away. Leo was only 49 years old when he died from a blood clot in the brain. He was buried on 20 Jan 1956 in Evergreen Cemetery, Louisville, Jefferson Co., Kentucky. As of 1994, his grave remains unmarked but is just to the right of two large cedar trees and the Wilbur headstone not too far from the road's edge.
